4) Angiosperms

Picture of Orchid
We have selected the orchid for discussion. It has the following characteristics that are adapted for insect pollination:
  • The orchid has petals that consists of many colours, mainly white and purple. These colourful petals attract insect pollinators to it.
  • The orchid gives off a fragrant smell which attracts insect pollinators to the flower.
  • The orchid has nectar and the nectary is deep within the the flower. The insect pollinator is enticed by the nectar and when it is moving towards the nectary to obtain the nectar, it will brush against the anthers and the pollen grains will stick onto its body.
We can differentiate between monocot and eudicot plants by the following methods:
  • Monocots have parallel leaf venation while eudicots have net-like leaf venation.
  • Monocots have petals in mulitples of 3 whereas eudicots have them in multiples of 4 or 5.
  • Monocots usually have seed pods which consist of 3 parts while eudicots consist of any number of parts
